How to Get a Library Card

Getting a library card is easy and free.

A library card is free to anyone who lives, works, owns property or goes to school in the Municipality of Port Hope. Library borrowing privileges are also extended to members of the Cobourg Public Library.

You can get a card by visiting the Circulation Desk at the Mary J. Benson or Garden Hill Branch.

You will need:

  • current identification that includes your name and address;
  • a parent's or guardian's signature for children 12 years or younger.

Port Hope Public Library welcomes new members of all ages. Sign your kids up as soon as they’re born - it’s a great way to spark a lifetime love of reading.

The Library accepts current forms of identification including:

  • driver’s licence;
  • utility bill;
  • property tax bill;
  • rental agreement;
  • bank statement or cheques printed with your name and current address;
  • school report cards.

Please contact the Library to find out what other forms of identification may be acceptable.

Temporary and non-resident memberships are also available.

The Port Hope Public Library also offers three-month temporary memberships and non-resident memberships. The $10.00 fee for a temporary membership includes a $5.00 deposit that is refunded at the end of the membership period once all Library materials have been returned. Non-residents may join for an annual fee of $35.00 per household.

Guests are always welcome.
